Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you're wondering about permanent makeup — answered honestly.

Why permanent makeup?
  • Feel confident and beautiful 24/7.
  • Save time every morning.
  • Ideal for those with contact lenses or cosmetic allergies/sensitivities.
  • Smudge-proof and waterproof—perfect for workouts, swimming, and busy lifestyles.
Does it last forever?
Permanent makeup involves implanting pigment into the skin, similar to traditional tattooing. While it can fade over time, pigment always remains to some degree. Laser removal is available for brows, but not currently for lips or eyeliner in the United States.
How many sessions will I need?
Most clients need two sessions initially (sometimes one, occasionally three) to achieve their desired effect. If a follow-up visit is needed to perfect the original application, it should be scheduled within 4–12 weeks of the original procedure (a $150 supply fee applies). After that, maintenance sessions every few years help keep your results perfect.
Is there a downtime?
None at all! You can return to work the same day. You may experience slight redness for an hour or two and bolder brows for the first few days. You may experience some swelling for one to three days following a lip procedure, but the majority of swelling subsides within a few hours.
Am I a good candidate?

Most people are! However, for your safety, we perform a medical screening. You are not a candidate if you are pregnant, nursing, taking Accutane, or undergoing active chemotherapy. Some conditions may require a doctor's note. A few timing notes from our intake forms:

  • COVID-19 vaccination: Your procedure must be scheduled more than 4 weeks after your most recent COVID-19 vaccine.
  • Cold sores (lip procedures): If you've ever had a cold sore, you'll need a prescription anti-viral (such as Acyclovir or Valtrex) from your doctor to prevent an outbreak — it's recommended you take it the day before, the day of, and the day after your lip procedure.
  • Lash stimulators (eyeliner procedures): Discontinue products like Latisse 2 months before an eyelash procedure, and don't resume until at least 2 weeks after. If you wear contacts, please bring your glasses to wear home.
Is permanent makeup safe?

Absolutely. At The Healing Design, your health and safety are my highest priorities. I follow the following strict clinical protocols to ensure a pristine experience:

  • Hospital-Grade Disinfection: I use high-level, EPA-registered disinfectants with tuberculocidal properties to maintain a disinfected environment between every client.
  • Single-Use Only: I use only sterile, single-use, disposable needle cartridges. Every tool that touches your skin is opened in front of you and disposed of immediately after your procedure.
  • Safe, Premium Pigments: Our pigments are vegan, cruelty-free, and rigorously tested for safety and long-term stability in the skin.
  • Cross-Contamination Prevention: I follow rigid protocols to ensure that every surface and tool remains uncontaminated throughout your visit.
  • Patch Testing: For added peace of mind, I offer optional patch tests (available upon request at least 24 hours before your appointment) to mitigate the risk of allergic reactions.

You can relax knowing that your beauty service is happening in the safest environment.

What about aftercare?
Healing is a collaborative process! You'll receive a specialized aftercare kit and a precise roadmap so your results heal softly and beautifully. See the full guide on the Aftercare page.
What are your booking & cancellation policies?
  • Consultation fee: A $20 non-refundable fee secures your consultation appointment.
  • Procedure booking fee: A non-refundable booking fee of 50% of the service cost holds your procedure date and is applied to your final balance.
  • Rescheduling: With at least 48 hours' notice, your booking fee may be transferred to a new date one time (within 30 days of the original date).
  • Late arrivals: There's a 15-minute grace period — please call if you're running behind. Arrivals more than 15 minutes late are treated as a late cancellation.
  • Follow-ups & touch-ups: A follow-up visit to perfect the original application carries a $150 supply fee and must be scheduled within 4–12 weeks of the original procedure. Requested shape corrections and additional touch-up sessions also carry a $150 fee.
  • Refunds: No refunds are issued. Permanent cosmetic tattooing is an art, not an exact science — results vary with individual skin type, lifestyle, and aftercare, and no specific outcome can be guaranteed.

The complete policies are in the client forms & consent packet (PDF), which we review together before your procedure.

Is there paperwork before my appointment?
Yes — every new client completes our client packet: intake and health history, procedure consent, photo consent, and the booking terms & conditions. We'll go through it together at the studio, or you can download the client forms (PDF) to review ahead of time — printing and completing them in advance saves time at your appointment. Please note that before-and-after photos are taken as part of every procedure for your client file; they're only ever shared publicly with your written consent.
